Video of The Ending
During the ending of the final scene the company of actors spread shoes across the floor as they exit through the loading dock door to the outside while Mother Courage follows them to the light with the wagon, trampling the shoes and not making it.
The concept of the shoes was an idea thought up by the set designer, Nikolas R. Serrano, through research of war depictions and the symbolism empty shoes carry.
